Since we are becoming quite the world travelers this year, what better way to have school in the month of December than to learn about Christmas around the world? There are sooooooo many resources for this!! I’m still even having trouble picking and choosing what we will focus on…but here are the main resources that I am using.

Books for All Countries (overview)
We will read a portion from one of these books each day.
Real Mother Goose Christmas Carols
Christmas Around the World [CHRISTMAS AROUND THE WORLD REV]
Hark! A Christmas Sampler
Christmas Carols for a Kid's Heart (Focus on the Family)
Homeschool Share has a free, HUGE, Christmas Around the World unit study AND lapbook!I am going to be attempting to “tie together” some of the countries around the world with the Christmas Carol that comes from that country. We are NOT attempting to learn about alllll of these many countries covered in these unit studies.

I saw this really neat video on Julie’s blog and had to order it for our advent learning time! This video will go perfectly with looking at the different Christmas carols from around the world!

Antarctica is our last continent to visit! We are coming to the end of a year long world tour! What FUN we have had!! After this week, I hope to do a bit of review, looking back through our notebooks of the entire year, reviewing the information we have learned about various countries and cultures. I also hope to have the girls choose one country that they would like to do a little report/project on to share with us.

Here are the resources we are using for studying Antarctica.

For our next destination (starting Monday after Easter) in our travels Around the World, we are headed out to Australia!! I’m excited about this location because we have several treats coming up to go along with our Aussie studies! We had a dear online friend send us a little package of Aussie treats, we have another friend who is actually here in our town from Australia teaching on his sabbatical – we will have him share with us one evening, AND I saved some goodies from our VBS last year, which was Boomerang Express, set in Australia!

Here are some other resources that we will be using with this study of Australia!

In our Around the World study, that is…I wish we could actually GO to all these places we are learning about this year. Maybe someday. :)

Of course, with our study of Mexico we will have to pull out our maracas as well as having some yummy food from El Sazon! Maybe we should make a pinata??

What are your favorite resources to use when studying Mexico? I’ve only scratched the surface, as I kind of decided last minute to go ahead and study Mexico this week, so leave me a comment with your ideas for studying Mexico!

A Favorite Resource

I keep meaning to share with you a book that we have been LOVING with our Around the World study this year! It is called Window On The World written by Daphne Spraggett and Jill Johnstone.

This book has a 2-page spread on countries in alphabetical order. The page on each country includes a small map, to help you see where the country is with neighboring countries as well. It also has a picture of the flag and pictures of the people from that country. The 2-page spread includes facts about the country like population, language spoken and religion.

My favorite part about this book is that it shares ways you can pray for the people of this country as a family! The book explains about Christianity in each country, telling whether there are Christians living there, if they are persecuted, if there are Bibles allowed there, and how you can pray for the name of Jesus to be shared in that country.

I think this book is particularly important to me because I pray that my kids will have mission-minded hearts. I want them to see that the different people around the world are beautiful and that they need Jesus, too. This book enables us to pray specifically for the different countries as we learn about them. I’m hoping and praying that as we study and pray together, God will weave into my kids hearts a love for people all over the world!

Headed to China!

In our Around the World studies, we are headed to China next! There is just SO MUCH to cover with China! We have covered China in the past with various unit studies, like the Olympic unit back in the summer of 2008, as well as various other studies.

This time around there are a few things I want to make sure that we cover, that we haven’t covered in the past. The Great Wall, Chinese New Year, and ancient China are a few of those new topics. I’d also like to review some geography of the country, point out important spots and look at the Yangtze river again.

Of course, there is a classic Five in a Row title that takes place in China — PING!! I really want to do Ping up really big, because this will likely be our last “rowing” of Ping. sniff sniff…and this time, Caleb will get to participate!! :)

In our Around the World studies we have spent the past few weeks in Japan. We have gotten to “row” some wonderful FIAR titles, one of which was Grandfather’s Journey. This book mentions WW2, so we learned a little bit about the war with our unit study last week.
My grandfather was a pilot in WW2 and we were able to visit with him and let him share some stories, show us pictures, look at his planes and hear about the war from someone who was there. This was a special time for us and I’m so thankful that we had this opportunity!

My grandma, this is a picture that she sent with him as he left for war. He carried it with him on all his missions!

This is a gift that my grandpa sent back from India to my grandmother.

My grandfather went on quite a journey himself, and I’m so thankful that he is still with us so that my kids could hear about this time in our history from one who lived it.
